Heathcliff, heartbroken and vengeful, sets his sights on disrupting Catherine’s marriage to Edgar Linton. Deep down, he knows that Catherine still harbors feelings for him, but she has chosen to be with Edgar due to his higher social standing. As part of his scheme, Heathcliff marries Isabella, Edgar’s sister, as a means to get back at him for his relationship with Catherine.
Catherine finds herself in a difficult position, torn between pursuing a life with the man she truly loves and marrying for social advantage. While she understands that Heathcliff still loves her, she attempts to secure a better future for herself. Consequently, she remains in a relationship with Edgar Linton, though her thoughts often drift back to Heathcliff.
In a final act of vengeance, Heathcliff orchestrates a marriage between Catherine’s daughter and his own son, Linton. He also seizes control of the Wuthering Heights estate from Hindley, Catherine’s brother. Ultimately, unable to bear the anguish of being apart from Catherine, he resigns himself to despair.
