After losing their mother, Edward and Alphonse Elric start practicing alchemy. On a fateful day, they use a transmutation spell to try to bring back their mother, but they fail to do so. Instead, they each lose a body part when they enter the law of equivalent exchange. Looking to start a new life, they embark on a journey to search for the philosopher’s stone.
Arriving in the city of Xenotime, the Elric brothers find themselves having to clear their names by two imposters impersonating them. They notice that everyone is hushed, and because of that, they will have to proceed with caution. Using a variety of research tactics, they eavesdrop on some folks and learn that there is a secret hideout where unusual activity happens. They use this information to find the imposters who are using their using their names and stealing their identities.
Finding a secluded building, Edward has a hunch that the people he is looking for are there. He slowly crawls inside the open window in the basement, finding a laboratory with formulas and potions. Edward infers that someone has been making philosopher stones. His assumptions turn out to be correct because he spots Russell and Flethcer, who admit to their crimes of making fake philosopher stones. Figuring the men out, they abandon their lab and leave the city. Before leaving, they tell him that they were the ones who hijacked his and his brother’s names.
